Welcome to the February Flight Plan, our monthly eNewletter from EAA 1358, The Wiregrass Chapter.

There is a great deal to cover this month from the Southeast World of Work through our upcoming Young Eagle Rally in March, so let's get right to it.

Southeast World of Work

Right now, we are participating in the Southeast Worlds of Work. (February 20th and 21st) We will reach many youngsters interested in pursuing a career in flight related industries and will sign up many new Young Eagles.

IN THE NEWS - Our 500th Young Eagle!

DOTHAN, Ala. (WTVY link to story) — An area pilot has now given more than 500 young people a free demonstration airplane ride as part of the EAA “Young Eagles” program, which is introducing a new generation to the world of flight.

Among the more than 50,000 volunteers around the world who have donated their time and aircraft to the effort is William Castlen of Dothan.

All pilots in the Young Eagles program explain the safe operation of airplanes and principles of flight before the short trips. Participating young people become official Young Eagles with the flight. The names of the pilots and the participants are also included in the “World’s Largest Logbook,” which is on permanent display in the EAA Aviation Museum in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, and online through the Young Eagles web site. Young Eagles also have access to an online pilot training course, made possible by Sporty’s Pilot Shops, located in Batavia, Ohio.

The Young Eagles Program was unveiled by the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) in July 1992 and has now flown more than 2 million young people, primarily between the ages of 8 and 17. EAA is a worldwide organization with over 200,000 members who enjoy all facets of recreational flight. The Young Eagles program goal is to allow young people to experience positive activities and discover the possibilities available to them within the world of aviation.

Auburn Aviation Camp Scholarship Winners/Florala

The winners of our 2019 David Miller Memorial Auburn Aviation Camp Scholarships are Stephen Cook, Tyler Wilks, Eric Hagedorn, and Michael Sullivan.

On March 9th after our chapter meeting, we will rally at the Dothan airport at 9:30 AM to make the presentation to the scholarship winners and then fly-out to Florala. We will need as many planes as possible at Dothan to transport the scholarship winners and at large members without planes to Florala. This will be our first of several quarterly fly-outs for chapter meetings.

Young Eagle Rally March 16th

Our next Young Eagle Rally is scheduled for March 16th with the 23rd as a WX back up at the Dothan airport. We need all members and additional volunteers on hand to assist in the processing and flying of Dothan's youth.

Big Promotion for Our Coordinator, Dave Stock

Chapter 1358’s Young Eagle Coordinator, Dave Stock, was promoted to Warrant Officer 5 by Major General William Gayler on Feb 1, 2019.  Dave’s wife Jennifer, son Carter, and daughter Hanna assisted in pinning on his new rank.
